How to name URLs and manage your webpages meta tags

Make sure your webpages have relevant and appropriate names. Some CMS systems provide generic numbers from the names of pages on blogs, however they also allow an override to create a more human readable name.

It doesn’t only make it easier for humans to read but also helps the search engines to understand what the page is about. This also is useful when compiling a long list of links, such that readers can choose their web destination efficiently.

URL

Each page within your site must have a unique address which is its Uniform Resource Locator (URL). The URL can be domain name followed by the extension.

When any visitor types your own domain name, the visitor will be directed mainly to your index file that is uploaded in your website contents where the letters after the dot to the right of “index” refer to the technology used during implementation process to create the page.

Within the content behind each page there are lots of meta tags that website owner can add to their website. Some tags are great for managing your pages and other tags are used to provide data for external programs such as servers, web browsers and robots.

Website management meta tags are mostly used by the people working on the site. While these tags may be important for your visitors and customers, they are actually more important for website owner and editors who are working on the website.

Meta tags

The more common meta tags used within a web page are the description and keyword meta tags:

Description: the meta tag description provides the search engine more than understanding about what your pages about. It also can be shown up in the search engine results to assist the reader to whether the page is relevant to their search criteria.

Keywords

Keywords: the keyword meta tag is not used within Google and only lightly used in other search engines. This used to be used to assist search engines in what the content was about however after being abused for so long there is little relevancy to put onto it. Some developers do not even use this tool as it might give away their “secrets” of the keywords that they are creating online marketing campaigns against.
We hope that this is of use are you and welcome any comments.

How to set up headers on your webpage

Just as a supermarket will provide signs and directions to the products you must do the same with regards to your online content to aid the reader in the search engines.

All lost in the supermarket

In comparing this to a supermarket, the domain name is the equivalent to the name above the shop. Each of the pages within your site will have a unique URL which is equivalent to the banners above each aisle to let shoppers know whether going.

Let’s say you have found your way to Tesco’s and once inside you have found the fruit & veg aisle. You now need to narrow your search to find the vegetable that you would like. In the supermarket this is done with labels and signs on each row, within a website this is done through header tags.

Header Tags

Header tags bits of code that are placed around the title of a section of content within a webpage, if you saw the code it would look like this <h1> potatoes </h1> this would tell the reader the content of text below would relate to potatoes. Having the header tag each one shows importance of this content. H1 being the most important and there should only really be one of these per page. There may be many types of potatoes in a supermarket and in webpage these would be shown by lower-level header tags h2 through to h6 showing the search engine importance and relevance of each of the bits of content.

These header tags help search engines help visitors to find the right content and provide the right search results.

But again, with all search engine optimisation never try to think you can outsmart the algorithms as they will clearly see through any tricks to stuff keywords into your site and for all your efforts you will be penalised accordingly.

Content managed systems (CMS) website development

When the Internet first started and businesses realised that they needed to have a website presence, it fell upon the IT developers to create websites as much as they had created IT programmes in the past. This was all well and good however when the actual business client wanted to make a change to the programme they had to go back to the programmers. Being clever little business people got very frustrated with this and demanded new functionality that allowed it so that they could update the content of the site without having to go through a developer. Businesses requested the developers to create software that the business users could update themselves, unless almost putting the developers out of business.

Thus the birth of content managed systems (CMS). These are extremely powerful and allow business users to update their sites instantly and bypassing the developers. This was obviously seen as a great business benefit and has cut out much of the processes that are involved in developing a computer program which at the end of the day is exactly what a website is.

Unfortunately, many of these processes included testing both the functionality and user acceptance. Business users have been placing content onto websites sometimes without testing against the various versions of Internet browser, and relative functionality within the site. So, this then calls back the programmers to develop tools that enable draft versions and testing to take place.
